The locals refer to the Agora in Wolverton as the spaceship which landed in the centre of their town. In association with Milton Keynes Festival Fringe, AGORANS explores the question, what if it is a spaceship?
Seven artists will unearth the ‘Agoran culture’ working across written, visual and audio platforms. The works will take shape through exhibition, performance and FREE family workshops.
AGORANS is a fictional and playful take on the Agora Centre, Wolverton. Built in 1979 the Agora Shopping Centre, designed by Milton Keynes Development Corporation (MKDC) has long since fallen into disrepair and is likely to be knocked down to help ‘rejuvenate and bring forward Wolverton as a town’.
Not everyone wants to see the building demolished. Some locals believe ‘this would mean the closure of all the small shops within… turning Wolverton into a giant building site for years to come.’
The free family workshops were held in the Agora on the 14 July and the work produced during the sessions is on display until the end of the festival, on the 19th. We will also be collecting local memories of the Agora throughout the exhibition, so please do spread the word.
